Job Description

A sustainability officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing sustainability strategies and initiatives within an organization. Their main goal is to minimize the negative environmental and social impact of the organization while maximizing positive outcomes.

  1. Develop and implement sustainability policies and initiatives: Create and implement policies and procedures to address sustainability issues such as energy and water conservation, waste reduction, and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
  2. Monitor and report on sustainability performance: Track and analyze the organization's sustainability performance, prepare reports, and present findings to management and stakeholders.
  3. Ensure compliance with regulations: Ensure that the organization is complying with relevant environmental and social regulations and standards.
  4. Engage with stakeholders: Engage with internal and external stakeholders to promote sustainable practices and develop partnerships to enhance sustainability initiatives.
  5. Educate and train employees: Educate and train employees on sustainability practices, policies, and initiatives.
  6. Develop sustainable procurement policies: Develop and implement sustainable procurement policies to ensure that the organization's purchasing decisions are environmentally and socially responsible.
  7. Create sustainable food and beverage programs: Develop and implement sustainable food and beverage programs that promote locally sourced, organic, and seasonal ingredients and reduce food waste.
  8. Implement sustainable resort / hotel operations: Implement sustainable resort / hotel operations by reducing water usage, energy consumption, and waste production.
  9. Continuously improve sustainability performance: Continuously monitor and evaluate sustainability performance, identify areas for improvement, and develop plans to improve sustainability outcomes.
  10. Assesses and analyzes company policies and processes to identify areas in and processes to which improvements can be made in accordance with the organizations commitment to sustainability.
  11. Brainstorms and identifies creative ways in which the company can balance business obligations with the goal of respecting, supporting, and improving the local and global environments.
  12. Proposes and implements strategies to address various environmental concerns including energy use, conservation, reduction of pollution, recycling, building and facility design, and general education on sustainability
  13. Drafts and implements sustainable organizational policies that address environmental concerns
  14. Evaluates efficacy of sustainability programs; recommends and implements improvements as necessary
  15. Conducts research to identify environmental and sustainability concerns, interests, and issues.
  16. Considers sustainability proposals with attention to factors such as cost effectiveness, feasibility, and ease of integration with other programs.
  17. Develops and maintains appropriate documentation and records including budgets and other financials.
  18. Prepares documentation required for project funding for various environmental initiatives     including proposals and grant applications.
  19. Maintains current working knowledge of, and ensures compliance with, all applicable local, state, federal, and internal environmental laws and regulations.
  20. Identifies and facilitates training as needed.
  21. Create an overarching strategy for sustainability in organizations with an accompanying             mission or vision and clear operating principles
  22. Build short and long-range operational planning that incorporates sustainability practices
  23. Act as an internal sustainability consultant in the organization to educate colleagues on          emerging trends, programs, and issues in sustainability.
  24. Directly manage all aspects of sustainability initiatives and programs, including                    administration of office, staff, and budgets
  25. Conduct an analysis of current policies, costs and benefits associated with implementing         sustainable practices in an organization.
  26. Fundraise (especially grant writing) to support sustainability project.
  27. Conduct audits and develop quality management and assurance based on client needs.
  28. Assess buildings on the level of current the efficiency and effectives of sustainability   programs.
